Diamonds are a girls best friend I hear. The diamond anniversary of Queen Elizabeth came and went in my household with no fanfare or ceremony. I lived in England for three years and never really had any kind of interest for the monarchy. It was very nostalgic to see my British friends from the UK post pictures of the towns I use to live and shop in, like Bicester and Banbury. The union jack dinner tables and napkins and old folks dining and reminiscing about the good ole day. For me they were, I miss England for it's history and tradition, not for the Socialist society they have created. Funny that they endeavour to be a classless land and yet the divides are deep and visible.
Though the Queen is seen around the world as a figurehead or tourist attraction, the Queen is quite active in the nation's affairs. Every Thursday evening there is a briefing with the Queen and she does direct the course of her subjects through giving the politicians a piece of her mind. The meetings are held standing up the entire time. The best political side show in the world and my favorite TV pastime when I lived there was watching the House of Commons during the prime minister question and action time.
I remember how expensive everything was. Especially gasoline which was over $5.00 a gallon. There was even a TV tax. It was like vehicle registration for you Television. So if you watched live TV you had better have paid your TV tax. The government had vans comb the countryside with scanners who would go down the street and monitor for TV waves. The van had equipment that could tell who had their tax sticker and who didn't. If they found a home that had not paid and was actively watching they would knock on your door and give you a ticket!
